Urban Hens 13th June

Filed under: Uncategorized — newcastletransition @ 10:00 am

TRANSITION FOOD GROUP ENCOURAGE YOU TO COME ALONG TO
URBAN HENS – TALK AND DEMONSTRATION (AND OPEN DAY)
SATURDAY 13 JUNE 2PM
WEST JESMOND ALLOTMENTS (entrance at junction of Fairfield Rd & south
end of Highbury)
If you’d like to know more about how to keep hens in your garden or
backyard, then come along and meet 2 ex-battery hens (the ultimate
urban recyclers)  and learn how it’s no more difficult than keeping
any other pet – but hens will give you eggs as well!
There will be plenty of time to ask questions and one of the girls
(they have still to draw lots) will be participating in a
demonstration of wing clipping.  This simple, totally painless
procedure generates more queries on the citychicken website than most
other things.
To find the hens at 2pm follow the signs from the Site Hut.
The Allotment Site is open to visitors on 13 June from 11am to 3pm,
so you are welcome  to come early and have a look round.
If you have questions about growing food
ask any of our members on site to help you.
There will also be a plant and seedling sale starting at 11am.
Facilities on the site are limited – bucket in a shed for the toilet.
If you’d like to sit down for the talk, then bring a camping chair.
Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and the hens I’ll have with
me aren’t used to dogs.  There is a lawned area by the Hut so you can
bring a picnic lunch.  There are many points of open water on the
site, so you must supervise your children at all times.
Anyone interested in Beekeeping can ask for Steve Emsley and he will
talk you through the process.
Any questions to Jane Cooper motherhen@citychicken.co.uk
