Get involved in designing and preparing a
Newcastle upon Tyne Green Map!

Dear colleague,

Climate and community mapping

We are writing to invite you to a special workshop, to be a part of producing a
new on-line interactive map of action on climate change and community action
in Newcastle upon Tyne. The workshop is on the 20th January, starting at 6pm to 8pm at Ouseburn Community Centre, Mowbray Street , Heaton, NE6 5PA.

The city has been invited to be part of a new national project and is one of only two other locations now under development (the other is for North Dorset). The aim is to map as much local / community activity as possible and to produce a permanent resource – a searchable map that lists this activity in several different categories (see below).

The map will help show national policy-makers and similar people just how much is going on at the local level in the riverside wards of Newcastle upon Tyne and its surrounds (and hopefully stimulate them to provide better support!). It will also be a valuable resource for the district, and help anyone interested in getting active in this area find out how and where they can get involved or simply get advice.

The work is being done by a social enterprise called Mapping for Change (MfC) on behalf of the Green Alliance (a national policy group). Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service is working together with MfC to organise this seminar, so that we can involve as many local organisations / groups and individuals as possible.

The purpose of the workshop is to pool our collective knowledge of climate
change and community activity in Newcastle upon Tyne to create as comprehensive
map as we can – and we need your help!

The activities that we would look to map fall broadly within these categories:
 Local infrastructure (larger community organisations, advice bodies, and networks – e.g.
those with offices / staff)(to include the main local sustainability / climate / environment
 Environmental / climate groups (including Transition Towns, FoE groups etc.)
 Community organisations active / interested in climate change (including faith-based
groups, residents groups etc.)
 Local projects on issues such as food, energy, waste, transport, biodiversity that link to
climate change issues
 Events (these would appear on the map until they happen)

We hope that you will want to come to the workshop. We will be discussing what goes on
your map (your ideas needed!), and how it is set up and run.
The workshop will run from 6pm to 8pm at Ouseburn Community Centre, Mowbray Street and will be be facilitated by Louise Francis and Chris Church from Mapping for Change.

This is a great opportunity to literally put what we are doing on the map!

To let us know you are coming to the workshop please complete the short booking form and return it to Jaz Nagra at NCVS by email or by post to
